A woman is accused of conspiring with her husband to have her boss killed after being taken hostage for N15 million.

A guy named Larry Adebayo Adewumi and his wife, Okereke Olufunmilayo, together with one Adebowale Sanni have been detained by Ogun State Police Command agents for their alleged roles in the kidnapping and murder of renowned hotelier Otunba Abayomi Ajayi Smith, the Director of Rolak Hotel Ijebu Ode.

On September 28, 2020, at around 7:30 am, some gunmen abducted Otunba Ajayi Smith from Anifowose Estate in Ijebu Ode.

According to a statement made by the state police command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, after learning of the kidnapping, men from the anti-kidnapping unit were called in to begin an investigation. However, despite the victim’s family paying the kidnappers a 15 million naira ransom, all attempts to free the victim proved unsuccessful.

Since then, police officers have continued to look for those responsible for the horrible deed.

When the team led by SP Taiwo Opadiran learned that the hoodlums were about to strike again, this time with the wife and kid of Otunba Ajayi Smith as their targets, their efforts resulted in a successful outcome in September of this year.

After receiving the intelligence information, the team started using technology to monitor the suspects. As a result, one of them was located in Ikeji Arakeji, Osun State, where Adebowale Sanni, 55, was captured.

During questioning, he admitted to being on the lookout for Yeye Olusola Roseline Ajayi, the wife of their previous victim, Otunba Ajayi Smith, with the intention of kidnapping her on the orders of the ringleader, Larry Adebayo Adewumi, whose wife Olufunmilayo just so happened to be a worker for Otunba Ajayi Smith.

He further admitted that Larry had given him directions to the victim’s hotel and his other business locations with the directive that, if they were successful in kidnapping the woman and her son, the two of them had to be killed after receiving ransom in order to leave no trace, just as they had done to her husband two years prior.

Olufunmilayo, Larry’s wife, who worked as a manager at the victim’s building supply stores, was detained as a result of his confession.

After Otunba Abayomi Ajayi Smith was abducted, Larry was apprehended three days later. At first, he denied any involvement, but when he ran into Adebowale Sanni, his accomplice, he realized the situation was serious.

The Ilesha Osun native Larry was a fraudster before turning to the kidnapping business full-time, according to Oyeyemi’s preliminary findings.

His strategy was to look for a wealthy victim before mobilizing the gang that worked for him to go after that individual. He learned everything there was to know about Otunba Ajayi Smith from his wife Olufunmilayo, who worked for him.

Further research found that Larry used to keep money earned from his unlawful activities in two different bank accounts.

The statement continued, “While he has the sum of four million five hundred and seventy six thousand eight hundred and forty six naira (#4,576,846) in another account with Bank, the sum of thirty four million, nine hundred and fifty three thousand four hundred and fifty five naira (#34,953,455) was discovered therein.”

A 2014 Toyota Highlander, according to a police spokesperson, was also found on him.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, who commended his men for painstakingly following the suspects until they were arrested, directed that other members of the gang should be hunted for and brought to book. He also directed that the arrested suspects be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

He continued by saying that CP Lanre Bankole, the state’s chief of police, gave the order to find and prosecute the other gang members after commending his officers for patiently pursuing the criminals till their capture. He also ordered that as soon as the inquiry was over, charges be brought against the suspects who had been apprehended.
